Gas SME / Quality Lead – Pipeline Projects

Location: Deeside
Contract Type: Part Time (3 days per week)
Rate: Competitive, DOE

I’m currently working with a specialist engineering firm delivering pipeline infrastructure projects on behalf of a major utility client. They are seeking an experienced Gas SME with strong quality management skills to lead on compliance and assurance activities on site.

Role Overview:

As the Gas SME, you will act as the key interface with National Grid and oversee the quality assurance of pipework installations. You will be responsible for reviewing and signing off sections of pipework aligned with Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) developed in collaboration with the Gas SME team. Your role is critical in ensuring all works meet required safety, regulatory, and client standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Project Quality Plan and associated QA/QC procedures.

  • Lead quality audits (internal, external, supplier) and inspections to ensure full compliance with ISO 9001, industry codes, and regulations.

  • Monitor site activities, ensuring strict adherence to safety and quality standards.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, and construction teams to embed quality objectives throughout project delivery.

  • Review and approve key technical documents including Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), Material Certificates, and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

  • Ensure thorough documentation and traceability of materials and workmanship throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), conduct root cause analysis, and drive corrective and preventive actions.

  • Act as liaison with clients, contractors, and third-party inspectors regarding all quality-related matters.

  • Provide training and promote awareness of quality systems among project personnel.

  • Report regularly to senior management on quality performance, metrics, and emerging issues.

Candidate Profile:

  • Proven experience in quality assurance and SME role within pipeline or gas infrastructure projects.

  • Deep understanding of National Grid requirements and UK pipeline standards.

  • Strong knowledge of ISO 9001, British Standards, CDM regulations, and relevant client specifications.

  • Ability to lead audits and inspections confidently, and manage NCRs effectively.

  • Excellent communication skills, with a track record liaising with clients and third parties.

  • Skilled in quality system implementation, documentation control, and training delivery.
